West Middlesex Schools hire new business manager and recognize staff | News

WEST MIDDLESEX – The West Middlesex Area School District will have a new business manager in place by the end of the school year.

The school board on Monday approved a contract for Marykatherine Sternthal as business manager and district board secretary.

The appointment was unanimously approved by the board, with only board member Michael Seech absent.

Sternthal will be hired as Business Manager for a rolling five-year term beginning July 1 or earlier as authorized by Superintendent Raymond Omer, until June 30, 2027.

His salary for the 2022-23 school year as a business manager is $78,000, the agenda shows.

Sternthal will serve as school board secretary for a rolling four-year term, from July 1 to June 30, 2026, with an annual salary of $2,500.

Sternthal will replace business manager James Hughes, an employee of the school district for 11 years.

Hughes announced his intention to retire at the April school board meeting, with his retirement taking effect June 29. Board officials were hoping to hire his replacement by May or June, giving Sternthal some time to work with Hughes before he retires.

In other matters, the school board recognized the school district’s cafeteria and custodial staff for their efforts during the start of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic closures.

High school vice-principal Aaron Pernesky, along with department heads, introduced employees and presented certificates to those in attendance.

Some of the employee actions included cafeteria workers arranging meal deliveries for students during remote learning and maintenance staff repeatedly sanitizing school buildings, Pernesky said.

The school board recognized the district’s transportation staff and presented them with certificates at a meeting earlier this year.

The district operates its own fleet of buses and has credited staff for their actions throughout the pandemic, from using buses to deliver food to transporting students after returning to in-person instruction.
