Suspect arrested with stolen mail
GLENEDEN BEACH – A suspect has been arrested after neighbors gathered to help find one of the burglars who looted 102 PO boxes here in the wee hours of August 19.
Joseph Galen Story was jailed on Saturday, August 21, amid dozens of charges of theft and conspiracy and a massive $ 4.4 million bail. Workers and business owners at a commercial plaza known as Gleneden Beach Station reportedly recognized the man in nearby security photographs taken during the 1.30am break-in at the post office in Gleneden Beach.
A person familiar with the matter reported that the suspect was spotted, confronted and followed by civilians who called 911. Lincoln Co. Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Landry arrived and interviewed the suspect, apparently discovering 10 books of stolen mail and narcotics. The suspect was apparently not on the radar of the local police when “he drifted and started prowling”, according to a resident on high alert. “Everyone was looking for these guys,” he said.
According to his jail rap sheet, Story faces 83 counts of mail theft, two counts of criminal conspiracy and one charge of criminal mischief in the 1st degree. All charges carry a $ 50,000 bond. His photo had not been posted on the LCSO prison website at the time of posting. The home page will continue to post further developments as they emerge.
Zeke Olsen, an employee of the US post office in Gleneden Beach, said the sheriff’s office would return seized mail Monday morning for redistribution. Meanwhile, the search for a second suspect is still ongoing.
