Main responsibilities

About the role:

The incumbent will be a member of the School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences Professional Services team and will oversee the operations staff who support the overall operational delivery of the group. The post holder will be expected to lead the coordination of high quality grant applications, grant management and funding for the Cancer Prevention Group (CPG) and its multi-million pound research portfolio. Many CPG projects are high profile and at the forefront of research in the field, including clinical research projects such as the NHS-Galleri trial and YouScreen and internationally recognized real-world data projects.

CPG’s portfolio includes several major Cancer Research UK awards, commercial/advisory agreements and senior fellowships. The incumbent will contribute to the group with operational management experience and strategic vision to ensure that the group meets current project milestones and continues to attract research funding, enabling its expansion. The incumbent will be expected to demonstrate a high level of engagement with the research community across all faculties and departments, as well as with external partners and stakeholders. Strategic thinking, teamwork and a proactive approach will be required to initiate and develop internal and external relationships, identify and respond to opportunities.

The incumbent must possess exceptional organizational, prioritization and communication skills with the ability to use own initiative to manage a varied workload with multiple parallel complex tasks.

Concretely, the role will consist of:

– Strategic planning to help the group attract research funding (both commercial and non-commercial)

– Financial management – lead the development and coordination of large research grant applications (£1m+) and associated pre-award activities

– Overall responsibility for day-to-day tasks associated with the post-award management of groups’ CRUK awards, including preparing budget reconciliations and new forecasts, liaising with funding agencies and advising Principal Investigators on resource allocation within the group and ensure compliance with funding

– Stakeholder management – develop good working relationships with other KCL departments, funding bodies or external parties

– Research Facilitation – senior research administration including contract applications and review/coordination

– Collection, management and presentation of data and information to enable the preparation of annual reports, grant applications and five-year reviews

– Day-to-day management of cancer prevention group operations that is: professional, well-executed, and timely, consistent with university policies, and promotes best practices in the group

– Line management/supervision of operations staff who support the overall operational delivery of the group or provide executive assistance to the group leader, Professor Peter Sasieni.

Key Responsibilities:

• Working closely with CPG team leaders and researchers, the incumbent will facilitate collaborative activities with stakeholders and support the generation of grant proposals with external partners (both commercial and non-commercial) by ensuring that all pre-award activities are managed effectively

  • Strategically target new funding opportunities for the group for continued growth ensuring alignment with business processes.
  • Responsible for post-award processes across the portfolio, including ongoing management and reporting of major funding programs
  • Work closely with grantees to ensure grant revenues are properly and fully committed and strategically managed so that grant funding pipelines integrate with staff and operational factors
  • Prepare communications, write presentations, briefing papers and background documents as required, including contributing, organizing and editing annual reports and five-year reviews (non-scientific aspects).
  • Oversee public engagement activities for the group and ensure they comply with relevant policies/guidelines
  • Own the group business plan, including budget and forecast oversight, recruitment plans, infrastructure and expansion plans, convey recommendations to school, faculty and King’s representatives wider for relevant support
  • Provide regular analysis of group performance via trends / metrics / key performance indicators which assists the management team in decision making.
  • Build strong working relationships with key partners beyond the university, including but not limited to Cancer Research UK, Guy’s and St Thomas NHS Trust, research collaborators at other universities

• Work closely with the Schools Communications and Engagement Officer and the Faculty Communications and Marketing team to promote and raise the profile of the group’s academic work

  • Oversee the workload and effectively manage operational team members who support the overall operational delivery of the group or provide executive assistance to the Group Leader, Professor Peter Sasieni.
  • Provide oversight and support on complex HR matters to line managers within the group
  • Undertake any other reasonable task and project as requested by the job holder’s line manager(s).

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

1. Graduate or relevant experience

2. Proven professional services skills acquired in the higher education sector, including pre- and post-award management

3. Highly nurturing with proven financial management and analytical skills to support strategic financial strategic decisions and procedures

4. Excellent communication (written and verbal), negotiation and influencing skills at all levels

5. Experience in financial planning and implementation, including preparing budgets, financial profiling, preparing business cases and plans, tracking key performance indicators and budgets (including reconciliations) and risks

6. Experience building an effective network within a complex organization and with external stakeholders

7. Business case/business plan development experience

8. Ability to work under pressure

9. Excellent task management skills, both for self and others, meeting tight deadlines

10. Commitment to good practice and monitoring of process/procedure

11. Ability to maintain confidentiality and act with discretion

Desirable criteria

1. Technical/scientific understanding of the field

2. Knowledge of health research practices and policies (bioscience/medicine)

3. Experience in personnel management

4. Knowledge of HR processes
