Honduran mother-daughter pursues business in Wallingford

WALLINGFORD — Blanca and Naomi Lara have a lot in common. The Honduran mother and daughter decided to tackle entrepreneurship together as co-owners of Naomi’s Nails Salon.

Blanca Lara said that when her daughter was younger they always did things together and now enjoyed working as colleagues.

“We understand each other well because we’ve never argued,” she laughed.

The couple opened the salon, located at 209 Center St., in 2017. Blanca Lara moved from Honduras to the United States with her husband in 1996, and Naomi Lara followed in 2012.

Mother and daughter first worked together in a nail salon in Meriden. They were both eager to grow up and went to school to improve their skills. Blanca Lara specialized in massages and Naomi Lara continued to learn about nails.

“We have been well accepted by the community,” said Naomi Lara. “It’s a good place for business. It is very advantageous that we are in the center of the city.

A regular manicure at Naomi’s Nails Salon includes cuticle cleaning and hand massage with lotion, oil, hot stone and hot towel. The regular pedicure includes the same process as the manicure, but it also incorporates a scrub and a pumice stone to smooth the skin. The salon also offers a spa pedicure with special skin care products and a longer leg and foot massage. Both regular and gel nail polishes are available.

Blanca Lara specializes in chair massages. She was inspired to become a masseuse because she enjoyed the massage experience herself, she said.

“I said, ‘I can do it too and I can make another person feel good,'” she said. “I love my job and above all, I do it with love.”

Sometimes her clients relax so much during a massage that they fall asleep. Both encourage clients to constructively critique their work so they can improve services.

“What I appreciate the most is when a client leaves very satisfied with the work I have done for them,” said Naomi Lara.

The pandemic

The business was closed for about four months at the start of the pandemic. There was uncertainty about what would happen to the business, but when it reopened it received a lot of support.

“I think from then on the business grew a lot more,” Naomi Lara said.

She believes this is partly due to their strict adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines and some good reviews online.

Brianna Perazella, of Middletown, has been a client for about a year.

“I’ve never found anyone who does my nails as well as Naomi and I tell her every time,” Perazella said.

Perazella also enjoys chatting with Naomi Lara while she gets her nails done. The first time she visited the salon, she was celebrating her birthday and she came with some friends.

Perazella, a nurse with a busy schedule, added that the company is very accommodating.

Naomi’s Nails Salon is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The salon receives clients by appointment only. To make an appointment, call or text 203-317-9291. For more information, visit Naomi’s Nails Salon on Facebook.
