Future of Freshwater Post Office uncertain after Tesco takeover
The future of the Freshwater Post Office is in limbo following the announcement of the Afton Road Co-op store being closed later this year and reopening as Tesco.
The store includes post office service, although there is uncertainty as to whether this will continue to operate under the new supermarket.
John Medland, Councilor for Freshwater South, has expressed concern over a possible closure. He said: “The loss of the Freshwater Co-op supermarket post office would be a big blow to the village.
“It is not only actively used for postal and government services, but it has recently been our only local banking service available with the suspension of community banking services.”
In a statement posted on social media, the company decided to reassure workers that they would have the option of being transferred to Tesco under the Employment Protection Transfer Undertaking Regulation (TUPE). .
He said the transition is expected to be completed in fall 2021.
The Freshwater Parish Council, which will discuss the development at its next meeting in early July, spoke about the importance of the post office and local food producers to the community.
They said: “We understand the concerns raised, in particular regarding the future of the Post Office franchise and the position of local food producers, who have had a close partnership with the cooperative for many years.
“We need to consider how these two important aspects of village life might be affected by the arrival of Tesco.”
The Co-operative store, part of the Southern Co-op group, opened in 2015, replacing a smaller store on Hooke Hill in the city.
A Tesco spokesperson expressed optimism about the development, saying: “We are delighted to open a Tesco supermarket in Freshwater in the fall, subject to certain conditions.
“We look forward to welcoming the Co-op team to Tesco so that we can continue to serve the local community in Freshwater.”
