Concerns about postal branch closures
The planned closure of 130 postal branches across the country will negatively impact grant recipients who rely on local branches to access their money.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) criticized the decision of the South African Post Office (SAPO) to permanently close the branches.

“ The DA will submit parliamentary questions to the departments of social development and communications, to find out what contingency plans have been put in place for the payment of social grants that could be affected by these closures, ” the DA said in a statement.
The party said this could be potentially catastrophic for the distribution of social grants.
“SAPO ultimately won the contract to distribute grants precisely because of its large footprint across the country and its ability to reach millions of poor South Africans in the most rural communities.
“Closing these cash distribution points will potentially leave vulnerable grant recipients in a bind,” the DA said.
Post office CEO Nomkhita Mona told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications last week that the decision to close the branches was due to unprofitability.
SAPO said it would merge some post offices, mostly in urban areas 5 km or less apart.
“Employees and equipment from the merged branches are redeployed to the area to empower the larger branches and ensure optimal customer service.
“The vast network of points of sale remains the unique advantage of the Post.
In view of the universal service obligation, no branch in rural areas is envisaged for the merger.
“This consideration is particularly important because the Post is also an entry point for government services such as social grants and motor vehicle permits,” said SAPO.
