Applications are invited for the position of Business Manager.

The position will be located in the Cancer Immunology Center at Southampton General Hospital. The Center is a newly constructed building dedicated to research which was the result of a major fundraising campaign. The Center draws on a 40-year history of pioneering immunology and cancer research at Southampton. The Center is the first dedicated center for cancer immunology in the UK bringing together the entire research pipeline under one roof: from pioneering scientific discovery to applied research and preclinical modeling and, crucially , first-in-man clinical trials and beyond. The Center houses world-class research facilities, which include not only state-of-the-art scientific laboratories, but also a clinical trials unit.

This position is among at least 50 new investigators and other staff who will work with existing investigators to build on the exciting advances already being made in the field of cancer immunology.

The position is associated with the laboratory of Professors Ward and Ober who are transferring their research group from the United States to Southampton. Their interdisciplinary research program is dedicated to the development of new antibody-based therapies which in the past have led to several new therapies which are currently in advanced clinical trials. The group also develops advanced microscopy techniques for the evaluation of new therapies in cellular environments. Their research is supported by major grants from the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and support from collaborating biopharmaceutical companies.

The post holder will be highly motivated and enthusiastic about the challenges of supporting a dynamic group of researchers with management and support roles. These involve the independent management and execution of interactions with stakeholders both inside and outside the university, such as granting agencies. Managing the organizational aspects of the research group will be central to the position, which will include event organization, diary and travel management, pre- and post-grant administration, human resource management and space and the preparation of reports.

Although direct experience in the role described in the job description is not a prerequisite, administrative or scientific experience is highly desirable.

You have relevant academic qualifications and work experience. You will also have good computer skills, the ability to plan and organize your own workload, show initiative, work well under pressure and communicate effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders within the organization and outside.

Informal inquiries should be directed to Professor E. Sally Ward, [email protected] or Professor Raimund J. Ober,[email protected]
