Brighton and Hove News »One of the UK’s largest banks is closing its Brighton branch today
One of Britain’s largest banks closed the doors of its branch on London Road, Brighton, for the last time today (Thursday July 1).
The branch is one of 111 that Santander says would be closed by the end of August in March, with 75 of them closing this month alone.
The closure comes just over a week after Lloyds announced the closure of its Preston Circus branch a few hundred yards further north.
Adam Bishop, Head of Branch Interactions at Santander, said: “Our customers continue to change the way they manage their money.
“In addition to using our branches, many more of our customers find it convenient to do their day-to-day banking transactions using online, mobile or telephone banking.
“As a result, customers visit our branches a lot less. This change has been happening for several years now and has accelerated in recent times.
“As a result of these changes, we have carefully and thoroughly reviewed how we are developing our services for clients and taken into account many factors, including the location of each of our branches and how they are used.
“We know that our branch network remains very important to our customers. Although we made the difficult decision to close some branches, we only did so when we knew that there are other facilities that our customers can use and where we have another branch in Santander a few kilometers away.
“As part of this review, we assessed each branch individually to examine the potential impact on our customers, colleagues and the alternative options available for banking locally.
“We hope this will help provide more information on our decision to close the Brighton London Road branch.”
The nearest Santander branches are in Western Road, Brighton, opposite Churchill Square Shopping Center, and George Street, Hove.
