Aretha Franklin now has a post office named after her in Detroit
Detroit post office pays tribute to legendary singer Aretha Franklin
If “put the respect on my name ”was a person, it would certainly have been the legendary Ms. Aretha franklin.
On Monday, October 4, 2021, the USPS Fox Creek station in Detroit, Michigan acquired a new name in honor of the Queen of Soul, and family, friends and city officials were all in attendance for celebrate the historic occasion.
“His heritage lives on in his music, in his family. But we’ve added her legacy to that list: a post office with her name on it, ”US Representative Brenda Lawrence boasted of her late friend at the dedication ceremony, according to the Associated Press.
After years of serving the Postal Service, Lawrence, who is also a Democrat from Michigan, introduced the bill to change the office’s name to Congress, and it was signed by Trump in January.
The Aretha Franklin Post Office building is ironically located five miles east of downtown Detroit, near an amphitheater on the Detroit River that also bears the icon’s name.
Known for her award-winning hits like “Respect”, “Ain’t No Way”, “Chain of Fools” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”, among an incredible list of other songs, Franklin lost her long battle with pancreatic cancer at her Motor City home in 2018. She was 76 years old.
